Where to eat after Newborough — and how to get there
There's a hunger that follows a long walk on Llanddwyn beach. Having felt the sand between your toes, taken in the fresh air and the stunning view of Llanddwyn Island stretching out in front of you. That hunger deserves a particular kind of answer.
The answer is Y Marram, which is also, as it turns out, where a lot of people's day at Newborough starts.
The main Newborough beach car park fills fast in summer. When it does, Y Marram opens its overflow parking field: £10 all-day, with £5 of that redeemable against food and drink when you get back from the beach. It's a scenic walk through one of the most beautiful parts of Anglesey — bring water, take your time, and know that a cold drink is waiting at the other end.
We're part of the Anglesey Seafood Trail which is a network of producers, restaurants and suppliers celebrating the catch that comes out of the waters around this island. The crab that ends up on your plate at Y Marram comes from the same coastline you can see from the dunes. At our relaxed venue - no need to dust the remaining sand off your feet - you can find seafood dishes like pickled Menai Oysters, Mussel and Lamb Cawl with dill, whole baked Malltraeth wild seabass with fish butter sauce. A short meat menu sits alongside, with local beers, ciders and wines leaning Welsh wherever the list allows. The vegetables come from our own veg garden or local suppliers a few miles up the road. The ethos is simple: the best things here are the local things, and they're worth slowing down for.
Marchnad Y Marram is our monthly market on the third Saturday of each month — local producers, fresh catch, food and craft with workshops and demonstrations too. In August that's Saturday the 15th. Come for the morning, stay all day, we’d love to see you.
Guest Chef Dinners bring some of the UK's most exciting chefs to Anglesey for intimate evenings under the stretch tent. This summer's series includes Adam Reid of The French, Jeremy Pang of School of Wok, Romy Gill, Simon Rimmer and Brayden Davies. At about 100 covers a night, tickets sell fast but you may be able to get your hands on the last few remaining.
And Y Marram is more than a day out. The cottage is available to hire, and there are caravan pitches on site. Waking up five minutes from Newborough is a different thing entirely.
Liam and Ellis Barrie built this place around Anglesey's produce and Anglesey's community. The parking field, the market, the guest chef series, the cold beer after the walk, it's all part of the same idea. Come and find us.
